Wizz Air Launches First-Ever Direct Flights from London to Medina — Making the Holy City More Accessible for British Muslims
In a historic move that brings the sacred city of Madinah closer than ever to the UK, Wizz Air UK has become the first airline to launch a direct flight between London Gatwick and the revered destination in Saudi Arabia.
The inaugural flight, which took off on Friday, 1st August, was marked with a celebratory send-off at London Gatwick in collaboration with the Saudi Tourism Authority and H.H. Princess Lolwa Al Saud.
For British Muslims, this development represents more than just a new route—it’s a significant milestone in accessibility for those seeking spiritual journeys to one of Islam’s holiest cities.
Affordable Daily Access to a Holy Destination
With daily flights now operating between Gatwick and Medina, and fares starting from just £134.99, pilgrims and spiritual travellers alike can now reach the City of the Prophet (peace be upon him) for under £400 return—a game changer for families, first-time travellers, and regular visitors.
Offering over 174,000 seats per year, Wizz Air is significantly opening up the route for both spiritual and cultural tourism.
Faith Meets Innovation
The new route is operated using the airline’s state-of-the-art Airbus XLR aircraft, designed for longer-range flights with improved environmental efficiency—another first, following Wizz Air’s earlier launch of the Gatwick-Jeddah route.
Yvonne Moynihan, Managing Director of Wizz Air UK, shared:
“Being the first airline to provide a direct connection from London to Medina is a special moment for us as we live up to our mission of democratising aviation… We’re giving thousands of people the chance to reach the Holy City – some for the very first time – at an affordable price.”
This initiative also aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which aims to boost tourism, diversify the economy, and welcome more international visitors to the Kingdom.
Gateway to a Sacred Journey
Known as the resting place of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Medina holds a deep spiritual significance for Muslims around the world. The introduction of a direct, affordable, and environmentally mindful route is not only a major travel development—it’s a heartfelt service to the Muslim community.
Jennifer Newman, Airline Relations Manager at London Gatwick, commented:
“This new route provides fantastic connectivity to Saudi Arabia and expands London Gatwick’s intercontinental network, giving more choice to travellers across London and the South East.”
Whether you’re planning your first Umrah, visiting Masjid an-Nabawi, or simply reconnecting with your faith, Wizz Air’s new route offers a modern, affordable gateway to one of Islam’s most sacred destinations.
Tickets are now available via wizzair.com and the official Wizz Air mobile app.
