Oman Developing One of the World’s Largest Caves for Adventure Tourism

Located on the Salma Plateau in the eastern Hajar Mountains of Oman, Majlis al Jinn is one of the largest natural cave chambers in the world, with a floor area of around 58,000 m² and a volume approaching 4 million m³ according to surveys.

The national tourism development body, OMRAN Group, has incorporated the cave into its broader ambition to expand and diversify Oman’s tourism sector, positioning the cave as a flagship adventure-nature attraction.

The cave’s ceiling has three vertical entrance shafts, each requiring a significant descent (~118–158 m) to reach the floor. Historically it has been accessible only to highly skilled caver but moving forward it will be accessible to all visitors.

The project is part of Oman’s attempt to shift from hydrocarbon-reliant economy toward a more tourism-led growth model, aligned with its “Vision 2040” framework and the National Tourism Strategy.

By developing one of the world’s most impressive subterranean attractions, Oman can differentiate itself in the crowded Middle East tourism market, appealing to thrill-seekers, nature lovers and “off-beat” travellers. The cave sits away from the usual coastal resort belt, helping distribute tourism more widely and encouraging investment in remote/regional areas. It will be such a unique attraction which supports higher yield tourism (premium markets, adventure-travel segments) rather than just mass beach tourism.

Development at the cave is part of a broader package including other nature/heritage assets (e.g., Al Hoota Cave, Wadi Shab) which helps build a diverse portfolio.

With OMRAN signalling strong backing for major investment in tourism infrastructure (including billions of dollars planned between 2024-2028) and plans to elevate natural, cultural and adventure experiences, Majlis al Jinn is likely to become a signature asset in Oman’s tourism offering.

Currrently experiencing Majlis al Jinn cave involves a rugged 4×4 journey to a remote plateau, followed by abseiling (rappelling) down about 100−120100 minus 120100−120 meters into a massive, single-chambered cave. The drive to the Selma Plateau is extremely challenging, featuring steep, winding, and often slippery dirt tracks.

The Cave will become a global draw for adventure tourists, further supporting Oman’s diversification objectives and helping elevate the country’s profile beyond traditional sun-and-sand tourism.
