Today in the Islamic Calendar: The 1st of Dhul Hijjah

Today marks the first day of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar — one of the four sacred months in Islam. These days are among the most spiritually charged in the year, filled with deep significance, reflection, and divine opportunity.

Key Events in Dhul Hijjah

  • Hajj (Pilgrimage to Makkah):
A pillar of Islam, obligatory once in a lifetime for every able Muslim. Pilgrims from around the world will begin arriving in Makkah to fulfill this spiritual journey.
  • Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice):
Commemorates the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah. In 2025, Eid al-Adha is expected on Friday, June 6, subject to moon sighting.

What Should Muslims Be Doing During These Days?

The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are among the most blessed days of the entire year. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Fasting: Especially on the Day of Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah) — it expiates sins of the past and coming year (for non-pilgrims).

Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah): Say Allahu AkbarAlhamdulillahLa ilaha illallahSubhanAllah frequently.

Qur’an Recitation & Prayer: Increase nawafil (optional) prayers and spend time reflecting.

Charity: Support those in need, locally and globally.

Qurbani (Sacrifice): On Eid al-Adha, offer sacrifice if able.

This sacred month is not just for pilgrims, it’s a universal opportunity for all Muslims to reconnect with their Creator, renew intentions, and perform good deeds with sincerity.

“That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days…”
(Qur’an – Surah Al-Hajj, 22:28)

May Allah accept your worship in these blessed days. Dhul Hijjah Mubarak!
