Lailat al Miraj 2026: The Prophet’s Night Journey and Ascension

Lailat al Miraj, also known as Isra and Mi’raj, marks one of the most profound and miraculous events in Islamic history—the Prophet Muhammad’s night journey (Isra) from Mecca to Jerusalem and his ascension (Miraj) to the heavens. During this divine event, the Prophet was purified, met previous prophets, and received the command for Muslims to perform five daily prayers (Salat).

When is Lailat al Miraj 2026?

On the Islamic calendar, Lailat al Miraj is observed on the 27th of Rajab, which in 2025 is expected to fall on the evening of 16th January 2026

The Journey of Isra and Miraj

The miraculous event begins with the Prophet Muhammad at the Kaaba in Mecca, where he is visited by two archangels. He is then provided with Buraq, a mystical winged steed, which carries him to the ‘Farthest Mosque’—believed by Muslims to be Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. There, the Prophet leads past prophets in prayer, symbolizing the continuation of divine guidance.

From Jerusalem, the Prophet ascends through the seven heavens, meeting prophets such as Adam, Moses, and Jesus, before reaching Sidrat al-Muntaha, the Lote Tree at the farthest boundary. It is here that Allah commands the obligation of five daily prayers (Salat)—a fundamental pillar of Islam.

Significance in the Qur’an and Hadith

The Quran briefly references the event in Surah Al-Isra (17:1), while additional details are found in hadith literature. The story of Lailat al Miraj highlights the spiritual connection between Mecca, Jerusalem, and the heavens, reinforcing the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

How Muslims Observe Lailat al Miraj

Muslims worldwide commemorate Lailat al Miraj with special prayers, Quran recitation, and storytelling to reflect on its significance. Some attend mosques for night prayers, while others observe it privately at home, sharing the story with children or engaging in personal worship.

Lailat al Miraj remains a night of divine connection, reflection, and gratitude, reminding Muslims of the power of faith and the significance of prayer in daily life.
