Haven House launches Ramadan campaign

Haven House Children’s Hospice has launched a new campaign for Ramadan to strengthen its links with Muslim communities.

To coincide with the holy month (which runs from the middle of May to the middle of June), the charity has written to more than 60 mosques across North and North East London, West Essex and East Hertfordshire, urging for their support.

Last year Haven House supported 353 children and young people and approximately one-third came from Muslim families.

Haven House Trustee Mohamed Omer, who is also Board Member of External Affairs at the Gardens of Peace Muslim Cemetery in Hainault, said: “With so many of our children and young people coming from Muslim backgrounds it’s vital that our supporter base reflects the spiritual and cultural diversity of our families.

“We have made progress in reaching out to Muslim communities in recent years, but we want to do even more to strengthen our relationships with local mosques who can help support our families by holding regular collections and raising awareness of our work.”

Samina Darr who lives in Walthamstow with her 8-year-old son, Muhammad Hashim, receives support from Haven House. Her son was starved of oxygen at birth and he now requires continuous care. During his short life, he has been critically ill in hospital and intensive care. His condition has progressively worsened, making it harder to take him out of the house.

Muhammad benefits from Haven House’s Hospice at Home service, receiving regular visits from the care team and takes part in many therapies we offer such as play and music. As he is visually impaired these help him interact with the world around him.

Samina said: “Hospice at Home has made a huge difference to Muhammad. Due to his condition sometimes it can be impossible to leave the house. He needs so much equipment and two to three people to help. Finding transport can be a nightmare.”
