Why The Cotswold Should Be on Your Bucket List

Deep in the South of England lies an area of vast beauty. The Cotswold – which is always at the top of the most beautiful places to visit in England – has long been a popular choice for those looking to experience another side of the country. Recorded as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1966, the large area covers approximately 800 square miles! With spectacular villages, peaceful countryside, and much in the way of leisurely acuities, many visitors struggle to leave once settled in!

But don’t just take our word for it! Here are five reasons why we think The Cotswold deserves a visit:

The Unspoilt Countryside

Taking up the counties of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire as well as parts of Wiltshire, Warwickshire and Somerset, The Cotswold is something else. The intact and preserved countryside is home to gentle streams, adventurous woodlands and lush rolling hills. But it’s not just that! With many hidden and signposted trails, visitors will be able to stroll through fields that stretch for miles whilst being one with the horses and sheep!

The Vast History

The Cotswold is steeped in history unlike many other regions across the UK. Dating back to the time of prehistoric Britain, the Avebury henge and stone circles are a remarkable site which surprises many visitors. Did you know that this site was built between 2850 BC and 2200 BC? The entire region also dates back to the time of the Civil War when it was a place of battles and violence. It’s for this reason that The Cotswold holds a special place in British history and why it is home to several World Heritage Sites.

The Quaint Villages

The Cotswold is home to some of the best villages in the UK. What’s more, the villages are unlike any you’ve visited before as they possess their very own charm and character. The unique and quaint honey-coloured stone cottages speak for themselves as they sit amidst the scenic and peaceful green settings. For a change of environment, various cities and towns can be reached after a short drive or walk.

A Walker’s Paradise

There’s no better place to enjoy a rural walk in the countryside. Thanks to the rolling hills and range of activities on offer here, hikers, bikers and gentle strollers have taken to the countryside of The Cotswold for their leisurely walks. Whether it’s the Cotswold Wildlife Park or Cotswold Water Park, there are over 100 miles of pathways paved for visitors just like you! Explore history by marvelling at historic buildings or enjoy a laid-back evening stroll through some of the area’s National Trails.

Unique Shopping Experience

Head over to the many quaint towns of The Cotswold and you’ll be surprised by the plethora of shops! If your ideal shopping experience consists of browsing independent shops, The Cotswold is the place to be. Here you’ll find many antique shops featuring art pieces designed by the locals themselves. Get away from the mundane high street shops and enter into a world of boutiques, independent shops and garden bazaars.
