Women in Leadership by Aisha Minhas

The climb to the top can be tough going: That goes for anyone who has high aspirations to achieve a high-flying career, but as women there are many hurdles that can make the journey upward, towards positions of power and influence, quite challenging. This can be due to self-doubt, racing to climb to the top or not having the right skills and qualifications to do the job.

Let me ask you a question, how often do we hear that women are too bossy; girls are often told, from a young age, that ‘they are so bossy’; but isn’t that merely being assertive and confident? As women in leadership, what sets us aside from the rest is that we are good in emotional intelligence, and if you reflect, we are already leading in our lives, whether this is in our personal lives with family; studying; relationships or working in whatever role you have!

If you are thinking of moving into a leadership role, then here are my three top tips to get you started:

Leadership comes in so many forms, such as:

  • Autocratic Leadership
  • Transformational Leadership
  • Hands-On, Participant Leadership
  • Transactional Leadership

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Taking your career to the next level comes with personal development. There are many courses available, be they online, in colleges or even a university degree (if you really want to specialise). There is no stopping what you can learn! ‘knowledge is key’

MENTOR

If there is a senior leader or someone whoinspires you, then ask to be mentored. This is an effective way of learning from someone who has been on your journey and can guide you.

GOALS

Setting yourself smaller goals with timelines enables an easier way to achieve your ambition and acquire the skills and knowledge required.
