You will soon discover that gorgeous little towns on the banks of the River Tweed are a common thing in the glorious Scottish Borders. Why not start with Peebles?
Only a short distance from Edinburgh, it is certainly no ordinary town with its spectacular scenery, shopping, cafés, events and outdoors activities to keep you entertained all year long. You wouldn’t be the first to feel inspired by the artsy town, with many notable residents including John Buchan, the Scottish novelist, choosing to make their home here.
Attractions to visit include:
Kailzie Gardens
Moy Mackay Gallery
You can’t put a foot wrong in Peebles, with so many different walks to choose from. Wander in the footsteps of a Borders legend along the John Buchan Way and take in the favourite beauty spots of the author of The Thirty-Nine Steps. Or, you can amble your way from Peebles to Glentress Forest, before coming back along the Tweed.
Peebles is bursting with tales from the past, not to mention picturesque architecture and fine buildings everywhere you look. Some of these are even thought to date back to the 11th century. The town is full of relics from times gone by, including an old Mercat Cross and the ruined Cross Kirk.
